Wallets
Trusted Monero wallets for desktop, mobile and cold storage
Desktop: Feather (light, advanced) or the official Monero GUI (with your own node). Mobile: Cake Wallet (iOS/Android) or Monerujo (Android). Large amounts: a Ledger or Trezor hardware wallet via Feather/GUI. Download only from official sites and verify signatures.
How to choose
- Open source is a must. A closed-source wallet for a privacy coin is a contradiction.
- Whose node: your own > remote over Tor > remote directly. A wallet on someone else's node reveals your IP and transaction timing to it (but not your keys).
- Does the wallet scan itself? Light wallets hand the server your view key — the server sees all your incoming payments.
- Coin control — choosing which outputs to spend. Helps avoid linking money from different sources.
- Seed compatibility — 25 words (classic) or Polyseed (16 words); see seed phrases.
Desktop
| Wallet | Platforms | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feather | Linux, Windows, macOS, Tails | Light, built-in Tor, coin control, Polyseed, hardware wallets, multisig | Monero only; UI for "advanced" users |
| Monero GUI | Linux, Windows, macOS | Official, can run its own node, "simple" and "advanced" modes | Heavier; a local node needs a full sync |
| Monero CLI | all | Reference wallet, every feature, scriptable | Command line |
| eigenwallet | Linux, Windows, macOS | Wallet + BTC↔XMR atomic swaps (formerly UnstoppableSwap) | Narrow focus |
Mobile
| Wallet | Platforms | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cake Wallet | iOS, Android, desktop | Most popular mobile wallet; multi-coin, built-in exchanges, Tor, custom node | Multi-coin = more code and attack surface |
| Monerujo | Android | Monero only, long-standing, Ledger support | Android only |
| Stack Wallet | iOS, Android, desktop | Multi-coin, open source | Fewer Monero features than dedicated wallets |
| ANONERO | Android | Focused on maximum privacy (always Tor), Polyseed | Niche, fewer users |
The well-known light wallet MyMonero stopped operating in January 2026. If you still have its 13-word seed, your money isn't lost: keys can be restored from it, but not every wallet supports that format — check the wallet's documentation before restoring and move the funds to a wallet with a modern seed right away.
Cold storage
- Ledger (Nano S Plus, Nano X and newer) and Trezor (Model T, Safe 3/5) support Monero via Feather or Monero GUI. The spend key never leaves the device.
- Offline wallet on an air-gapped computer + a view-only wallet online: transactions are signed offline and carried on a USB stick (cold signing in Monero CLI/GUI/Feather).
- Paper wallet — the seed on paper/metal, wallet created offline. Robust, but spending requires restoring on a computer.
What not to use
- Wallets that ask for your seed on a website.
- Browser extensions and "Monero" apps not mentioned on getmonero.org or by the community — a classic source of theft.
- An exchange account as a "wallet": coins on an exchange aren't yours, and the exchange knows everything about your transfers.
Official Monero binaries are signed; hashes are published in hashes.txt, signed with binaryFate's key. Feather publishes signatures too. Verification takes five minutes and protects against tampered builds — such attacks have happened (in 2019 getmonero.org briefly served a malicious CLI build).
